" I./24 Pantherabteilung that landed in Hungary just days before the Konrad III operation . ( 18-29.January 1945 ) The unit had trained on IR before the depart - see letter - but no IR was used during this Operation . One reason was of course the snow on ground that time - The IR didnt work in snow due its extreme reflections. Another reason was still lack of education on the equippment and the fear it could land in enemy hands. However this Pantherabteilung was a very experienced unit and operated mostly under command of the 1.PD. The Companys was not named "Kompanie" , but "Squadrons" ( Schwadrons ) due its connection as a Cavalry tradition unit. Each Squadron had its own sign marked on the rear hatch of the turret. Note also that Biwa Panther with IR box , setting on mantlet had the handle removed on the commanders hatch - so the platform could rotate 360 degrees. Here is a pic of a I/24 DB Panther KO in Hungary during very intence battles trying to reach and open the incirclement around Budapest. Three attemps was done in January - they all failed. Note the dead soldier on engine deck - probably from I.SS.Pz.Gren.Rgt 23 NORGE which fought desperate in this Village ."
En gros on peut retenir :
. La réflexion de la neige impropre à un bon usage de l'infra-rouge ;
. Le manque d'entraînement des équipages ;
. La crainte que l'équipement tombe entre les mains des Russes.
