am just not sure, due to the limited AA fire & no evidence of the bomb being released before it struck. And there appears to be smoke from the superstructure, as if the first plane had already hit (?).
I read an account mentioning an eyewitness crewman who was strapping a pilot into his F4U Corsair & who saw the first plane come in and hit...The second plane came in at a more extreme angle, I thought.
I do know some quad 40mm mounts (such as No. 15, starbd side aft) were neither fully manned nor in automatic control when the planes hit, and therefore didn't fire at all. There had been bogies reported on radar earlier that day & then dismissed when they never materialized.
However, Mount 17 did fire about four (4) rds later when another ZEKE came in, but it was splashed by the carrier's 5"/38cal battery apparently. Soon after that the 40mm ammo in Mount 17 began cooking off. A vet I knew said they tended to split open more like fire crackers than true detonations, luckily, but he knew it was time to get out of there. There was a bulkhead between the inferno on the hangar deck and the area on the stern where men were clustered & it was feared it might melt...Also, concern that a pyrotechnics locker nearby might explode as well.
By that time--approx. 25-30 mins after the first bomb--everything aft on that side was in flames or enveloped in choking smoke, and as the situation became more chaotic men were starting to go overboard...including the guy I knew...
