Au moins 80 volontaires afro américains servirent dans les rangs des bataillons Lincoln et Washington durant la guerre d'Espagne .

Le plus connu était le capitaine Oliver Law .

Il fut promu commissaire politique puis commandant de cette unité entre février et avril 1937 .

Il reçut ensuite le commandement du bataillon Lincoln , puis celui de l'éphémère bataillon George Washington jusqu'à sa mort à Brunete le 9 juillet 1937 .
